Current State Process Mapping
Objective
Visualize the steps of a current process and identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and areas with little to no value in the end-to-end process.
What is Current State Process Mapping?
Current State Process Mapping is used to visualize the steps of a current process and identify areas with little to no value in the end-to-end process. This mapping can be used to understand the sequence of activities and visualize the flow of materials and information required to bring a product or service to the end user, with timing, handoffs, wastes, and improvement priorities identified. This style of mapping helps to identify sources of non-value-added time or materials and identify opportunities to increase efficiency. The final deliverable encompasses an outline of the existing process that provides a holistic view of the sequence of activities.
How do I apply Current State Process Mapping?
Create a cross-functional team of employees from a wide range of positions within the organization. Decide scope of current state to be mapped.
Begin to develop the Current State Process Map by breaking down each operation into specific tasks. Draw out this process as a team.
Add a timeline to the Current State Process Map to give the team information about total process times.
Identify areas of waste/no value/delays within the process – these are considered bottlenecks. The team can then brainstorm ways to reduce these occurrences ahead of developing a future state process map.
